The McEnroe family began farming as a dairy farm (formerly called the Ray-Barb Farm) in 1953 in Millerton, NY.
History
1987
In the 1980s, the McEnroe family began collaborating with the Durst family, with the goal of leaving the world a better place for future generations. The farm began its transition to organic farming practices.
1994
In 1994, the last of the dairy cows were sold, and Ray McEnroe began to raise organic Angus and Hereford beef cattle. Since 1994, we have increased our beef herd from 15 to 150 head of cattle.
2000
The farm begins to diversify and starts the development of the vegetable and compost production operations. Poultry, pigs, and sheep are added to the livestock. All livestock are pasture-raised. We never use added hormones, antibiotics, or genetically-modified seed for livestock feed.
2007
The Model Organic Farm Foundation is established to manage McEnroe Organic Farm and provide educational experiences to the public. The Education program begins to provide farm-based learning opportunities and foster support for organic agriculture. Events and programs are held to engage the community and teach organic, sustainable farming practices.
Today
McEnroe Organic Farm has been NOFA-NY Certified Organic for over 25 years; it is one of New York's oldest and most diverse certified organic farms and stands at over 1,200 acres of fields, pastures, and greenhouses.
The farm's methods include crop rotation, biological pest control, composting, careful cultivation, and cover cropping. We grow certified organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and feed for our livestock. With greenhouses and cold frames, we extend the season for organic tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, field greens and herbs, enabling us to grow as early as April and as late as December.
For more than 20 years, McEnroe's premium soil blends and compost have been used by other organic growers, regional farms, commercial landscapers, municipal parks, home gardens, and for green rooftops. Our composting operation receives manures, leaves and food waste, all of which we organically convert to a high quality compost soil amendment, which we use to ensure a rich and biodiverse organic farm.
Our goal is to give our customers confidence in the food they eat, knowing where it was grown, and that it is high-quality, healthy, and free of pesticides and added hormones.
